How to put volunteer work on your resume (with examples)
Give volunteer work its own section, or put it with your jobs when it's your strongest proof for the role. Either way, write it like a job: what you did, for whom, and what changed. Below: three layouts, the formula for each bullet, and examples you can adapt.

Volunteer work is real work.
The short version
Give volunteer work its own section, called Volunteer experience, after your jobs.
Move it in with your jobs when it's the strongest proof you can do the one you want, with Volunteer in the title.
List it like a job: your role, the organization, its city and province, and the month and year you started and finished.
Write two or three bullets on what you did, for whom, and what changed.
Newcomers: volunteering builds Canadian experience and references for your resume. Immigration programs such as the Canadian Experience Class count only paid work.
1Where volunteer work goes on a resume
Most resumes give volunteer work its own section, called Volunteer experience, after Experience and Education. When a volunteer role is the strongest proof you can do the job you want, it can go inside Experience, with your paid jobs.
Either works. Job Bank, the Government of Canada's job site, says unpaid work can go under "Work experience" or "Volunteer work", especially when it relates to the job you're applying for (How to write a good resume, checked 13 October 2026).
If you
Put volunteer work
See
Have paid work in the field you're applying to
In its own Volunteer experience section, after Experience.
Include volunteer work that shows a skill the posting asks for, fills a gap between jobs, or shows experience in Canada. Job Bank also says to include volunteering with a well-known organization or for an important cause. Leave out one-day events from years ago unless they match the job. A recruiter skims, so every line should help.
2How to list and format volunteer work
Format each volunteer role the same way as a paid job, so a recruiter reads it the same way. Each entry needs:
Your roleA title that says what you did: Volunteer tutor, Board treasurer, Event coordinator. "Volunteer" on its own doesn't tell a recruiter much.
The organization, city and provinceIts full name, then where it is. If it isn't well known, add a few words on what it does.
DatesMonth and year, start to finish: September 2023 to present. The same as your jobs, as our Canadian resume format guide explains.
Two or three bulletsWhat you did, for whom, and what changed. More on that below.
Hours (optional)About 6 hours a week, or 300 hours in total, when the number shows commitment.
Three ways to lay it out
Alex, Riley and Sam are made-up people. Every detail and number in these three examples is invented to show the layout, and the organizations are left generic.
AIts own sectionThe usual choice. Your jobs come first and volunteer work follows under its own heading. Best when your paid work is in the field you're applying to.

3How to describe volunteer work
To write volunteer work on a resume, use the same formula as paid work. Each bullet says what you did, for whom, and what changed because of you.
What you didRan a weekly homework club
For whomfor 12 students in Grades 6 to 8
What changedand 10 of them raised their math mark by June
Job Bank says your duties will be obvious from your job title, so highlight what you achieved, with specific examples and firm numbers (How to write a good resume, checked 13 October 2026). Volunteer work is no different. Start each bullet with a strong verb, such as organized, trained, led, raised or built. Use the present tense for a role you still have and the past tense for one you've finished.
No numbers? Count something
The people you served, coached, trained or led
How often: weekly, every second Saturday, for three seasons
Events, shifts or hours
Money raised, managed or saved
Something still in use after you: a schedule, a guide, a new way of doing things
Before and after
Made-up lines, with invented numbers, to show the change.
BeforeVolunteered at the food bank.
AfterSorted and shelved donations every Saturday, cutting the Monday restock from three hours to one
Says what you did, how often and what got better.
BeforeCoached kids' soccer.
AfterCoached a team of 14 players aged 9 and 10 for two seasons, and every player signed up again the next year
Who it was for, for how long, and a result anyone can picture.
Getting from the first line to the second takes the questions a good career coach asks: how many, how often, what changed? YapApply asks them while you talk through your volunteer work, then writes the bullets for each job you apply to.
4Volunteer work examples
Two bullets each for six common kinds of volunteering, in cities across Canada. Change the details to match what you did, and keep the shape: what you did, for whom, what changed.
These entries are made up to show the wording. Every number is invented, and the organizations are left generic. On your resume, use the organization's full name and your own numbers.

October 2023 to present

5For newcomers to Canada
Many newcomers volunteer to build experience in Canada, and it can help in more ways than one. IRCC's job search advice for newcomers says volunteering can help you get Canadian work experience, find someone who will be a reference for you, and build your network of contacts (IRCC, Look for jobs in Canada, checked 13 October 2026).
List it like a Canadian job
Name the organization, then its city and province, so an employer sees at a glance that the work happened in Canada: Volunteer bookkeeper, community food bank, Halifax, Nova Scotia. If the organization isn't well known, add a few words on what it does. When the role draws on your profession, use a title that shows it. An accountant who keeps a charity's books is a volunteer bookkeeper.
Turn it into a reference
A volunteer coordinator or board chair who has seen your work can speak for you, which helps most when your other references are outside Canada. Ask before you leave the role, and tell them the kinds of jobs you're applying for. Keep their name, title, phone number and email on your reference sheet. Job Bank says to keep references on a separate sheet and share them when an employer asks (How to write a good resume, checked 13 October 2026).
Volunteer work and immigration programs
Planning to apply for permanent residence? The Canadian Experience Class and the Federal Skilled Worker Program count only paid work toward the work experience they need. IRCC says volunteer work and unpaid internships don't count for either one (Canadian Experience Class and Federal Skilled Worker Program, checked 13 October 2026). Volunteering still helps your resume and your job search. Just leave its hours out when you add up your work experience for an application.
Employers can't simply demand Canadian experience
Ontario's Human Rights Commission says a strict requirement for Canadian experience is discrimination unless the employer can show it's truly needed for the job, and that employers should consider all relevant work experience, wherever it was gained. Its survey also found that many newcomers turn to unpaid work, such as volunteering, to meet employers' demands for Canadian experience (Policy on the Canadian experience barrier, checked 13 October 2026). So list your work from other countries in full, and let volunteer work in Canada add to it.
Our Canadian resume format guide covers the rest for newcomers and international students: jobs and degrees from outside Canada, credential assessments and work hours on a study permit.
6For students and career changers
A resume puts the strongest proof first. If your volunteer work shows more of what the job needs than your paid jobs do, it can go above them. Put volunteer work above a paid job when:
it uses the skills the posting asks for, and your paid job doesn't
it's more recent, or you're still doing it
it shows responsibility your paid job doesn't, such as leading people or managing money
Students and new graduates
Lead with Education, then the experience that fits the job best. A student applying to work with children might put tutoring and camp volunteering above a cashier job, as in Sam's layout. Part-time work still belongs on your resume, since it shows you're reliable. It can just come lower down. Applying for a co-op term? The co-op resume guide has full one-page examples for engineering, computer science and business students.
Career changers
Group your experience by how well it fits. A Relevant experience section at the top holds the paid and volunteer roles that match the new field, newest first. An Other experience section below holds the rest. Keep Volunteer in each volunteer title, so it's clear which roles were paid.
7Five common mistakes
Only the organization's name, such as "Volunteer, community food bank". Add your role and two bullets on what you did. How to list it
No dates. Give the month and year you started and finished, like any job. Dates
One-word duties, such as "Fundraising" or "Events". Say what you did and what changed. How to describe it
Hiding that it was unpaid. Put Volunteer in the title or the section heading. A reference check will show it anyway.
Every event you ever helped at. Pick the roles that fit the job and give them room. Which to include
8Questions people ask
Where does volunteer work go on a resume?
In its own Volunteer experience section, after Experience and Education. When a volunteer role is your best match for the job, it can go in Experience with your paid jobs, with Volunteer in the title. Job Bank says either place works, especially when the work relates to the job.
Does volunteer work count as work experience?
On a resume, yes. Job Bank says unpaid work can go in your Work experience section, especially when it relates to the job. For immigration, it depends on the program: the Canadian Experience Class and the Federal Skilled Worker Program count only paid work.
How do you format volunteer work on a resume?
Like a job: your role, the organization, its city and province, and the month and year you started and finished. Then two or three bullets on what you did, for whom, and what changed.
Should I include volunteer work that isn't related to the job?
Include it when it shows a skill the posting asks for, such as leading people, handling money or working with the public. A long commitment, such as three years on a board, is worth a line even in a different field. Leave out short, unrelated roles when space is tight.
Can a volunteer coordinator be a reference?
Yes. IRCC lists finding a reference as one of the ways volunteering can help newcomers. Ask before you name them, and keep references on a separate sheet, as Job Bank advises.
How far back should volunteer work go?
The same as your jobs. Job Bank says to put the emphasis on your most recent experience, and that experience more than 15 years old should be cut or kept short. Keep an older role only when it's your best match for the job.
