Canadian resume format: the rules, a free template and a full example
A Canadian resume is one or two pages, written for the job you're applying to, with no personal details beyond your contact information. Below: each rule with its source, a full example, and a template to download.

Month and year. Every time.
The short version
One page if you're starting out, and two pages at most.
Newest job first, each with the month and year it started and ended.
Canadian spelling: organize and colour.
Contact details only: no photo, age, birth date, marital status or Social Insurance Number.
Rewrite it for each job, using the posting's words for skills you really have.
1Canadian resume format at a glance
These are the rules Canadian employers expect. Where a rule comes from the Government of Canada or a human rights body, the source is linked.

Length
Two pages at most. One page is often enough for students and early careers.
A Canadian-style resume uses the same sections in the same order, whatever your field.
Contact detailsYour name, city and province, phone number, email and LinkedIn profile.
SummaryTwo or three lines written for this job: who you are at work, your strongest skills and what you want to do next.
ExperienceNewest job first. Title, employer, city and dates, then three to five bullets on what you did and what changed because of it.
EducationCredential, school, city and the month and year you finished. Students and recent graduates can put it above experience.
SkillsSix to ten skills from the posting that you can show: software, tools, licences and languages.
Volunteer experience (optional)Written like a job, with what changed because of your work. Canadian employers count it.
Certifications (optional)The certificate, who issued it, and when: a first aid course, a forklift licence or a professional designation.
3What to leave out
A Canadian resume sticks to your work. Job Bank, the Government of Canada's job site, says a photo isn't the norm in Canada and lists the personal details to leave off (How to write a good resume, checked 13 October 2026):
A photo
Age or date of birth
Marital status
Religion
Height and weight
Political views
Social Insurance Number
Full street address
Human rights law backs this up on the employer's side. In Ontario, an application form can't ask about marital status, sex, family status or religion, can ask about age only to check you're 18 or over, and employers shouldn't ask for photos (Ontario Human Rights Commission, checked 13 October 2026). Other provinces have similar rules.
When you do give your SIN. Service Canada says your Social Insurance Number is only required after you're hired, when your employer needs it to report your income, and filling out a job application isn't one of the times you have to give it (Protect your SIN, checked 13 October 2026). So it never goes on a resume.
4Dates and spelling: where other guides go wrong
Popular resume guides give at least five different rules for dates, and some tell Canadians to write in British English. Here's what the Government of Canada's own writing guides say.
Dates
Write the month in words and the year in numbers: March 2022 to present. The Language Portal of Canada says formal writing should use dates with the month in words, and keeps all-number dates for places where space is short (Date: how to write the date correctly, checked 13 October 2026).
When you do use only numbers, the Government of Canada standard puts the year first: 2022-03-14, or 2022-03 for a month. A date like 03/04/2022 reads as March 4 to some people and 3 April to others. The Canada.ca style guide also joins date ranges with "to" (Canada.ca Content Style Guide, checked 13 October 2026).
Spelling
Canadian spelling mixes British and American forms. The Language Portal of Canada recommends -ize and -ization (organize, organization), and -our, -re and -ce in nouns such as colour, centre and licence (Spelling: international variations, checked 13 October 2026).
A few verbs end in -ise in Canada too, and some turn up on resumes all the time: advise, supervise, revise, advertise and compromise (Words ending in -ise and -ize, checked 13 October 2026).

So a guide that tells you to write a Canadian resume in British English is wrong. Organise and realise look out of place to a Canadian reader. Set your spell checker to English (Canada) and it will catch most of them.

Before and after
Most resumes list duties. A strong line says what changed because of you. Two lines from Jordan's resume, before and after:
BeforeResponsible for inventory counts.
AfterRun monthly inventory counts across two warehouses and keep count errors under 1%
Says how often, how big and what got better.
BeforeHelped train new staff.
AfterTrained 11 new warehouse staff on scanning and safety, each working alone within two weeks
A number and a result turn a duty into proof.
Getting from the first line to the second takes the questions a good career coach asks: how many, how often, what changed? YapApply asks them while you talk through each job.
6Free Canadian resume template
One page, one column, standard headings and no tables or text boxes, so the software employers use to sort applications can read every line. Each section tells you what to write.
Job Bank, the Government of Canada's job site, also has a free resume builder. YapApply works differently: you talk about your work, it asks the questions a coach would, and it writes a resume for each job you apply to.
7International students and newcomers
The format is the same for everyone. What changes is how you show experience that a Canadian employer may not know yet. And employers can't simply demand Canadian experience: Ontario's Human Rights Commission says a strict requirement for it is discrimination unless the employer can show it's truly needed for the job (Policy on the Canadian experience barrier, checked 13 October 2026).
Count your Canadian experience
Part-time jobs, co-op terms, campus jobs and volunteer work all go on your resume, each with dates and results, written like any other job.
Use the right work hours
If your study permit allows off-campus work, you can work up to 24 hours a week during regular terms, and unlimited hours during your school's scheduled breaks, such as summer and winter holidays (IRCC, Work off campus, checked 13 October 2026). If you say when you can work, use the same terms: available up to 24 hours a week during term, and full time during scheduled breaks.
Show experience and education from outside Canada
List jobs from other countries the same way, with the city and country. If an employer might not know the company, add a few words on what it does.
For a degree or diploma from outside Canada, an educational credential assessment shows its Canadian equivalent. IRCC says the report can also help when you're looking for a job (IRCC, Educational credential assessment, checked 13 October 2026). Add the result under the credential, for example: assessed as equivalent to a Canadian bachelor's degree.
Planning to apply for permanent residence?
The Canadian Experience Class counts skilled work in Canada: at least one year, or 1,560 hours, in the three years before you apply. Work done while you were a full-time student, co-op terms included, doesn't count toward it (IRCC, Canadian Experience Class, checked 13 October 2026). Keep the job titles and dates on your resume the same as the ones you'll report.
8Five common mistakes
Dates that can be misread, such as 03/04/2022. Write March 2022. Dates
British spelling, such as organise and realise. Use organize and realize. Spelling
Duties without results, such as "responsible for inventory". Say what changed. Before and after
One resume for every job. Change the summary, skills and top bullets for each posting. Tailoring
9Questions people ask
How long should a resume be in Canada?
Two pages at most, which is Job Bank's advice. One page is often enough for students and people early in their careers. Put your strongest lines first, since a recruiter may only skim the top.
Do you put a photo on a resume in Canada?
No. Job Bank says a photo isn't the norm in Canada, and employers shouldn't ask for one. The same goes for your age, date of birth and marital status.
Is a CV the same as a resume in Canada?
Mostly. Many Canadians use the two words for the same thing. In universities, research and medicine, a CV is a longer record of your education, research, publications and teaching.
Should a Canadian resume list references?
No. Job Bank says to keep references on a separate sheet and share them only when an employer asks, usually after an interview. Let your references know they may get a call.
Should I send my resume as a PDF or a Word file?
A PDF looks the same on every screen, so send one unless the posting asks for Word. Name the file with your name, such as Jordan-Tremblay-Resume.pdf.
How do I write dates on a Canadian resume?
Month in words and year in numbers, such as March 2022 to present. If you use only numbers, put the year first: 2022-03. Both follow the Government of Canada's writing guides.
